Creating a plan is all about Being Ready.  When you are Ready you know your starting point

You need to know what your starting point is in order to be able to plan the route to your destination.  The best roadmap is ineffective if you don’t know where on the map you are starting from.  Many business owners have taken wrong turns that cost both time and resources because they didn’t have a clear idea of where they were starting from and just what their true destination was. It was because they didn’t have a plan, they just weren’t Ready.

Creating a plan also makes you think about your goals in real terms and assists you in assessing what amount of capital you will need from the sale or transition from your business for whatever comes next.

When you know what your business is worth today and you know the amount of resources you will need to accomplish your goals in the future any shortfall between these two points is called the Value Gap.  With a known Value Gap, you have a clear and understandable goal that can be approached and achieved.

In other words, you will know what your “number” is.   This is the number that you would accept should someone make an offer to buy your business, net of fees, expenses and taxes that will allow you to achieve your exit goals.
